Cometbus is one of the first punk-influenced zines to really go literary in a big way, and it's certainly been an influence upon thousands of other upstart publications. The article I've linked to here is six years old -- which amazes me at how time flies, since I remember living in San Francisco when the paper version of the article came out -- but it is still a really good primer for those who are unfamiliar or just curious. Aaron Cometbus just reprinted a bunch of old issues in a new book called Despite Everything: A Cometbus Omnibus that is available in many bookstores.

This zine by Portland duo Nate & Jeremy is also excerpted on the web, but i suggest tracking down a copy of the print version if you can. (Reading Frenzy has 'em if you're in Portland.) These guys are both masterful prose writers, and discuss bikes, politics, love and emotion in a way that just isn't tackled elsewhere. Read it and weep, but in a good way.

All the junk on this site (graphics, audio, text) is (cc)1999-2009 Recursive Delete. Not because we believe that we invented the wheel and want credit for it, but just because it's not cool to take other people's art and use it for your own without at least asking first.
