The Clutters - link - Sunday, June 11, 2006 - comments (0)
I haven't seen Doug, the guitarist/vocalist in the Clutters, in at least eight years -- we went to high school together and played together in Thee Autobots just after I had graduated. When our band met its demise and I moved to California, I remember questioning Doug's decision to pursue his ska band side project more seriously. But it was the mid-nineties; it can be forgiven! These days, in the mid-00s, Doug is living in Nashville and playing in the Clutters and, if reports would be believed, taking fans of garage music by storm. On bass is Jake Rosswog, also a high school classmate, who played with me in my first ever band(!), formed when I'd gained my first crappy drumset on my sixteenth birthday. (8x10 Nude Glossy was the name -- ask me for that story sometime.) I hope I get to see these guys live one day!

I look at most of the projects I work on and see that they have a very surface-level appeal to them. Amanda, on the other hand, has studied this thing that we call "art" and is obviously very high-minded about it. Consider me jealous -- and flattered that she saw something in WAGNC!7 (which she proofread and co-edited), which seems to me almost like art brut by comparison.

The SnuggleUps - link - Tuesday, May 03, 2005 - comments (1)
This is a Portland electropop duo that really has to be seen to be believed. I've known these guys since "before they were stars," and I think that is what makes me appreciate the music they make all the more. They are best friends and champion this continously in their lyrics, which sit atop their catchy jams like so many cherries on a row of sundaes. Eat it up, I beg you. One of these days -- at least in my dreams -- Recursive Delete is going to put out a 12" of 15-minute SnuggleUps extended dance mixes.

Meeker - link - Monday, June 02, 2003 - comments (1)
David Hornbuckle's most recent musical incarnation, from what I've heard of it so far, matches electronic beats and doctored melodic vocals with distorted guitars. His first album is due by january 2004, so let's hold him to the promise. (Note, 6/11/06: According to David, Meeker may be a retired concern at this point.)

This is a collection of individuals in the Portland area who work out of a downtown space where they "create performances where actors, technology and physical space interact." They have numerous performances in the realm of music, theater and other mediums.

Bryan Free - link - Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - comments (0)
Bryan knows the value of exquisitely crafted lyrical wordplay, but if you see him live you couldn't be blamed for not recognizing it right away -- you'd be too busy watching his fingers dance across the keys. (This guy knows how to play the piano.) Sometimes his songs veer into radio-friendly territory, but you really can't fault him since his ideals are so grounded; he's just doing it for himself and has no lofty aspirations beyond that. (Note, 6/11/06: I updated the link today.)

No, I'm not talking about the place that delivers your mail, I'm talking about the synth pop duo featuring Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie) and Jimmy Tamborello / Dntel. I remember the first time I heard the songs on a pre-release CD at Q Is For Choir here in Portland -- it was one of the few moments in my music-listening life where I was absolutely compelled to ask what it was that was playing. Pure melodic bliss; I heard it only once and I already knew it was a near-perfect pop record, I didn't even have to let it grow on me. (Note, 6/11/06: Funny how three years and the massive overplaying of a record can change your perspective.)

This is a two-piece group who I originally discovered because their album was produced by Matt Mahaffey (Self), but they are excellent in their own right. Their debut CD These Are The Plans... can be found in dollar bins at record stores across the land, and you'd do well to pick it up if you like super-catchy melodies and can appreciate a sense of humor that's a cross between Ween and They Might Be Giants. (Sounds horrible, I know -- but trust me.) They've got some excellent new MP3s on their website; check out "Creepy Girls" in particular.

All the junk on this site (graphics, audio, text) is (cc)1999-2009 Recursive Delete. Not because we believe that we invented the wheel and want credit for it, but just because it's not cool to take other people's art and use it for your own without at least asking first.
